How to recruit international school staff.

DIRECT TO YOUR WEBSITE.

Many schools post their vacancies on their web sites, and some schools have their own application platform. Pros: Candidates applying through your web site have already expressed an interest in working at your school, so this is a positive first step. If you have an application portal, you can ask the questions that are important to you. School groups have an advantage of being able to centralize their available positions, so this can be efficient. Cons: Schools can easily be overwhelmed with the sheer number of applications, and this requires manual checking of each applicant. Candidates are still able to apply, even if they don’t meet your hiring requirements, and references have to be followed up. 

JOB FAIRS.

Search Associates and ISS are the two biggest operators of international job fairs. Pros: If you live in or near locations where the fairs run, and the timing of the fairs works for your school, this can be an effective way to find new staff.  Cons: Candidates cannot attend all fairs, so selecting which ones to attend is difficult.  Further, the timing of these fairs doesn’t always align with school or host country notice periods. These fairs have high associated costs for candidates and schools, so they are somewhat exclusive.There are job boards available on a range of websites.

PLACING ADS.

Depending on where you are in the world, there are some key web sites and traditional media that schools can use to advertise their available positions. TESTIC, TIE, and Guardian Jobs are all good examples of these. Pros: As these are well-known publications, candidates know to check these sites for positions.  They have high web visibility, so attract candidates who are searching for jobs. Cons: Similar to the Direct to Schools approach, schools can easily be overwhelmed by a large number of under-qualified candidates, requiring manual qualifying and reference-checking.  The costs of these ads is also high, with no guaranteed returns,

RECRUITMENT CONSULTANTS.

Recruiters working for schools are another effective way of finding qualified candidates. Pros: Unlike some of the other application processes, recruiters know what a school is looking for and will take the time to find qualified candidates to introduce. Cons: One challenge with this approach is the sheer number of recruiters in the market.  Teachaway, TIC, eteach, Teachingabroad, Teacher Horizons – there are dozens and dozens who have different regional and curricular areas of focus.  A second major drawback to this, is the cost involved.  Fees for successful hires are thousands of Dollars/Euros/Pounds per candidate – with those new hires sometimes only staying for the initial contract period.
