Your Best Marketing Is Your Faculty. Why Are We Recruiting Them Like an Afterthought?
Another in our series of guest blogs, this is authored by Rob DiMartino - an expert in using marketing technology to improve enrollment at Independent & International schools. Rob is a 25-year education technology builder, founding Finalsite leader, independent-school market trusted advisor, speaker, investor, and board/advisory operator.

Independent and Boarding schools are very good at recruiting families. The website tells a story of the family journey. The tour is personal, the follow-up is fast, and the admitted-student experience is designed to make a family feel chosen. Schools have spent years refining every touchpoint, and it shows.
Now look at how the same school recruits a teacher. The job posting sits three clicks deep on the website or, worse, an employment portal off the school site. The application is a long form followed by silence. The candidate may never see a classroom, meet a student, or hear what makes the community special before accepting an offer.
That gap is a sustainability issue. A family chooses your school because of the people in front of their child. Losing a great teacher hurts retention, culture, and the enrollment story you've worked so hard to build.
The candidate is on a journey, too. A life-changing journey.
I've spent my career helping independent schools on marketing, communications, and engagement. The lesson I keep coming back to is that people don't choose a school based on information. They choose it based on how it made them feel. That is just as true for a prospective faculty member as it is for a prospective family.
A talented teacher researching your school is asking the same questions a parent asks:
- Will I belong here? Can I grow?
- Do these people care about each other? Will they care about me?
- Can I see myself doing my best work here?
If your enrollment funnel answers those questions beautifully and your hiring process ignores them, you're telling great candidates something you never intended.
Five ways to close the gap
- Give school/employer brand a home. Create a careers page that feels like part of your school's story, not a compliance page. Feature real faculty voices, real classrooms, and real moments.
- Borrow from admissions. Your admissions team already knows how to host a visit, follow up personally, and nurture interest over time. Invite them to help design the candidate experience.
- Communicate faster and more warmly. Silence after an application is the faculty version of an unreturned inquiry. Acknowledge every applicant promptly and personally.
- Let faculty tell the story. Prospective families trust teachers more than brochures, and so do prospective colleagues. Short videos and stories from current faculty do more than any job description.
- Treat the first 90 days as part of recruiting. Onboarding is the last stage of the journey. A welcome that feels celebratory, not administrative, is the best retention tool a school has.
Bring the joy inward
The schools that will thrive in the next decade won't only be the ones with the best enrollment marketing. They'll be the ones that bring the same care and joy to every relationship in the community, including the adults who show up every day for the children.
Your family journey already works. Point that same craft at the people who make it possible.
